Amplifier Basics

Amplifiers are one of the most misunderstood components in car audio. They do not exist simply to make systems louder. Amplifiers exist to deliver clean, controlled power so speakers can operate correctly.


What an Amplifier Does

An amplifier increases the voltage of the audio signal so speakers can move properly. It does not create sound quality — it reveals the quality of the signal it is given.

Amplifiers Do Not Equal Loudness

Loudness depends on speaker sensitivity, enclosure design, vehicle acoustics, and proper tuning — not just amplifier size.

Understanding Amplifier Power Ratings

Amplifier power is rated in RMS watts, which reflect continuous usable output. Peak or max ratings are marketing numbers and should not be used for system design.

Impedance and Load Matching

Amplifiers are designed to operate safely within a certain impedance range. Lower impedance increases current draw, heat, and electrical demand.

Amplifier Classes (Overview)

  • Class A/B – traditional design, less efficient, often used for full-range speakers
  • Class D – highly efficient, compact, commonly used for subwoofers and modern systems

Class alone does not determine sound quality. Design and application matter more.


Gain Is Not Volume

The gain control matches amplifier input sensitivity to the source signal. It is not a volume control.

Incorrect gain setting causes clipping, excess heat, and speaker damage.

Electrical Requirements

Amplifiers are only as strong as the electrical system supporting them. Poor wiring and voltage drop limit performance and reliability.
