One of the biggest reasons people are disappointed with their car audio system is simple: they never decided what the system was supposed to do.
Before choosing subwoofers, amplifiers, or enclosures, you must choose a system goal. Almost every car audio system falls into one of three categories: SPL, SQ, or Daily / Balanced.
What Is an SPL Build?
SPL (Sound Pressure Level) builds focus on maximum loudness. The goal is to move as much air as possible and generate high sound pressure, often measured in decibels (dB).
- Maximum output
- Efficiency at specific frequencies
- High power handling
- Large enclosures and multiple subwoofers
Tradeoffs include less natural sound, narrow frequency focus, and increased electrical demand. Proper enclosure design and signal flow are critical.

What Is an SQ Build?
SQ (Sound Quality) builds focus on accuracy and realism. The goal is to reproduce music as faithfully as possible with proper tonal balance and imaging.
- Flat frequency response
- Accurate imaging and soundstage
- Low distortion
- High-quality installation and tuning
SQ systems rely heavily on DSP tuning, speaker placement, and door treatment.

What Is a Daily / Balanced Build?
Daily builds are designed for everyday enjoyment. They balance sound quality, loudness, reliability, and comfort.
- Clean sound at reasonable volume
- Musical bass without extreme output
- Reliability and practicality
Most daily systems use moderate power, efficient speakers, proper enclosures, and basic tuning.
Daily systems benefit from understanding RMS vs Peak Power, Speaker Sensitivity Explained, and Setting Gains (Multimeter Method).
Why You Can’t Build All Three at Once
Trying to build a system that is extremely loud, extremely accurate, and inexpensive violates basic physics and electrical limits.
This tradeoff is explained further in Car Audio 101.
Common Mistakes
- Expecting SQ sound from an SPL build
- Overspending on power without fixing installation
- Choosing gear before defining goals
- Copying builds without understanding the design
